Stress Management Techniques and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

When we think of stress, we typically think of what is called emotional stress. Emotional stress is not the only kind of stress that affects us though. There are many types of stress which affect a great number of people.

Different stress means different symptoms. Let’s take a look at the different kinds of stress.

Types of stress:

Physical Stress:

This is a stress that is internal, but is exposed on the outside. The symptoms include poor concentration, skin problems, fatigue, headache, sweaty palms, insomnia or sleeplessness, stomach problems, digestive problems, appetite loss, shortness of breath, constipation, diarrhea, and pounding heart.

Behavioral Stress:

This stress comes out as anti-social behavior. The symptoms include expressions such as road rage, getting into arguments and fights with friends and family, and increased consumption of alcohol.

Emotional Stress:

This is a stress that affects emotional stability. Post traumatic stress fits into this category of stress. The symptoms include mood swings, nervousness, irritability, hostility, anxiety, moodiness, depression, seriousness, and poor judgement.

Psychological/Mental Stress:

This is a stress that affects mental well-being. The symptoms include low self-esteem, negative self-talk, and fuzzy thinking.

What to do about stress:

First and foremost you have to be able to recognize stress. Many people do not recognize stress when they are in the midst of suffering from it. It is similar to being drunken. When people are drunken they do not always realize that they have consumed too much alcohol nor do they realize that their actions show that they are over their alcohol consumption limit.

Once you realize that you are suffering from stress you need to take measures to reduce and manage your stress level. Stress management is important so that other disorders do not come about as a result of the stress. Some things you can do to reduce your stress levels include the following:

  1. Increased exercise
  2. A well-balanced diet
  3. Meditate
  4. Relax
  5. Cut back on activity level

It is also wise to consult your doctor when you are under stress. The doctor can to tests to make sure that the stress is not due to underlying physical ailments. The doctor can also give you more suggestions as to other things that you can do for stress relief. It is vital that you see your doctor and get tests done as the different types of stress can be results other health conditions and ailments such as OCD (Obsessive Compulsie Disorder), heart disease, ulcers, etc.
