Since its creation, yoga has always worked hard to bring together the mind and the body in harmony for a better being and even with present-day yoga, the intentions have not changed, only refined and improved with time. There is a great deal of tradition in the the history of Yoga and the system encourages phsyical, mental and spiritual health through the roots of fitness and has a heritage that goes back many thousand years from the country of India. In order to understand the history of yoga, you must understand the traditions involved and recognize the four cateogories of yoga, which are the pre-classical period, classical period, post-classical period and modern-day yoga styles.
The Book of Yoga: Yoga Sutra
The history of yoga would not be complete without the book of yoga sutra and without it, would not have been able to complete the classical period. The word yoga itself means the ëYolkí or something which joins other things together and a good example would be joining of a cart to the ox while using a yolk. Thus, you can easily infer that yoga has everything to do with uniting each and every aspect of the human being into one single entity.
Whatís more, you should not be misled into thinking that yoga means just contorting the body into weird poses because that is simply a small aspect of it and there is more to it including ethics, physical postures as well as controlling the breathing and it even includes meditation.
Of late, modern yoga has undergone something of a renaissance and the history of Hatha Yoga has gone with the times and become more globalized and now there is a visible delineation between the religious aspects and the practice of yoga. The history of yoga has shown us that there are many different types of teaching methods and schools on yoga that allow different philosophies and approaches to the influential yoga poses.
No matter what school or philosophy you enjoy, the history of yoga remains pure in that the intention of yoga is to provide a harmony of the mind, body and spirit for the individual. Rather than see yoga simply as a way to stay lean and strong, the history of yoga teaches us that these postures will help to empower our lives through the use of better mind and body control over time for better health.
