According to Tai Chi breathing methods , breathing should not be done by mouth, only by nose. Most of our sports exercises teach us to inhale by nose and exhale by mouth, which makes nose breathing a bit peculiar. Sometimes it takes time and patience to master such methods. Until the trainee can learn how to perform it, this breathing technique will seem very difficult. Beginners will first dedicate a lot of time and attention to the body posture and moves, and only when they master these, will they move on to the Tai Chi breathing methods.
In the first training stages, the student just needs to breathe relaxedly and feel comfortable. Yet, substantial and insubstantial breathing make the difference between internal and external energy movement. When you master these two types of Tai Chi breathing methods you actually have access to superior energy, and viewed in the bigger picture, such a capacity causes longevity.
The external part of Tai Chi consists of the moves, while the internal part involves breathing. The two have to be coordinated. Yet, in the teaching process, these two are seldom paired, because learning Tai Chi breathing methods and body postures at the same time will be hardly possible. Most Tai Chi breathing methods rely on the following basic elements.
Inhalation accompanies arm extension while arm withdrawal comes with exhalation.
Inhale when you rise and exhale when you sink.
Inhale when lifting and exhale when you lower.
Short breathing breaks are necessary for body turns or between movements.
Inhale when rolling back and exhale when pushing hands.
There are many other examples for Tai Chi breathing methods but they follow a similar pattern. They are both related to the direction of the breathing along the spine, towards or from the tail bone.
Tai Chi breathing methods are also accompanied by the production of two sounds ‘heng’ when inhaling and ‘haah’ when exhaling. The sounds are produced naturally, the internal chi is thus kept comfortable and smooth, and there is no harm done by the internal pressure on the organs. The mastery of Tai Chi breathing methods comes with experience and great skill. But with practice you will get there eventually!
