In the oral healthcare market of today, home teeth whitening systems have become a major industry. Whitening chewing gum alone is estimated to earn an astounding 17 million dollars per annum in sales, and that is just for a single brand name. When you take into account several other products such as brushed on bleaching gels, whitening toothpastes and whitening strips, it is easy to see just how large and profitable the market has grown into. Oral care as we know it nowadays, has not always been that way though and is somewhat different from its rather modest beginnings. The lengths that a lot of folk would go to in the past just to get a natural smile can make you very grateful for the modern-day conveniences that we take for granted nowadays.
Nowadays, most of us know that brushing our teeth daily or after meals is the 1st step in home teeth whitening. To do that, we turn to our trusty toothbrush to remove any surface buildup on our teeth. Everybody has a toothbrush readily available but what would you do if you could not find yours. You would venture outside into your front or back yard naturally and find yourself a suitable twig. In times gone by, folks would actually chew on twigs in order to clean their pearly whites. After that, some clever individual, way back in history, had the bright idea of fashioning a piece of wood and adding boar bristle to the end of it. And so the toothbrush was born although the thought of having a mouthful of pig hairs first thing in the morning is not too attractive.
Home tooth whitening kits may have come a long way but the demand to have whiter teeth is certainly not the latest fashion fad since it has been around for many years. Hundreds of years ago, the local barbers shop would also be the place to go if you needed anything doing to your teeth. To give you the dazzling white teeth that you wanted, the barber come dentist would file the tooth surface down and then apply a Nitric Acid solution. While this procedure would certainly work in the short term, the teeth would start decaying quickly because of the lack of tooth enamel protection which would be destroyed by the process.
Think of that fresh minty taste of your toothpaste. Most whitening toothpastes nowadays contain sodium bicarbonate as an active component. It is still a common practice to brush the teeth with bicarbonate of soda straight out of the Arm & Hammer packet. If you do not want that baking soda taste, then you might want to stick to toothpaste. At any rate it no longer contains urine, which was a common element in the 1800’s.
If it is said once, it will be said a hundred times over your life-time. The best home dental teeth whitening system all starts out with following a proper oral hygiene routine. Avoiding tobacco products, red wine and beverages such as coffee and tea are also great ideas if your goal is to have pearly whites. Do not take for granted how simple it is for modern man to have whiter teeth. At least you do not have to brush with a toothbrush made of pig hair.
