Composition Of Diet Soda

People who want to reduce the use of sugar and lose weight diet sodas are marketed towards them.

Various artificial sweeteners and even sugar with other artificial sweeteners are used to give sweet taste to diet soda. About the taste of these drinks opinions are mixed. Assumptions are that the taste of only sugar drink is best. A lot of consumers complain that Aftertaste is left by diet drinks. Others feel that diet soda has no bitter aftertaste and that drinks sweetened by high fructose corn syrup an over-sweet aftertaste.

The first known artificial sweeteners were cyclamates. Many had the opinion that these sodas had a better taste than diet sodasthat followed. Around 1970 in US the FDA restricted the use of cyclamates. These agents caused cancer in lab animals. Even with that information, cyclamates are not restricted in some countries and are used in diet soda.

Saccharin was in use by the American producers. A chemical was founded in saccharin aftertaste by the consumers. By adding a small amount of sugar Coca-Cola produced Tab. Though a ban was put on saccharin as a carcinogen in 1977 by FDA but this ban was removed as the experiments were over. This was lifted in 1991, but nearly every diet soda had shifted to using aspartame which is now the most common sweetener.

Two new sweeteners are available in the market, sucralose called Splenda and Sunett or Ace K used with small amounts of aspartame or artificial sweeteners. These are often utilized by some smaller beverage manufacturers.Currently aspartame is believed by the users to be the cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome type illnesses.

Most users say drinks with these sweeteners taste somehow same as natural sugar.  Critics complained the taste is not better and advise that the long-term risks of using artificial sweeteners are not yet known.

Seriousness about health from sugar substitutes and extra intake of caffeine has taken crediblity out of diet soda as a weight loss tool under a cloud.

Consumers who user of regular soda may have weight loss after switching to diet soda.Artificial sweeteners increases weight this shows the animal studies. The sweetness of the taste hastens an insulin response resulting blood sugar to store in tissues but because blood sugar does not develop with artificial sugars hypoglycemia can emerge and people eat more at the next meal. After sometime the rats were given sweeteners which increased their caloric intake resulting in increased body weight and fat.

So, the jury on how helpful diet soda is to losing weight is still out.
