Can Chiropractic Treatment Relieve Elbow Pain?

Tennis Elbow, the common name for elbow pain emanating from the outside, or lateral side, of the elbow occurs when one or more tendons of the forearm muscles become irritated or inflamed. These tendons join to the bony protuberance approximal to the elbow joint, called the lateral epicondyle, hence the medical name, “lateral epicondylitis,” meaning inflammation of the epicondyle. If the problem is located on the inside, or medial side, of the elbow it is frequently known as Golfer’s Elbow or medial epicondylitis. This, though, is not as commonplace as lateral epicondylitis.

There are many whys and wherefores for epicondylitis – not just tennis and golf – as any activity or sport that necessitates repetitive gripping of objects can result in this affliction. Improper wrist and arm posture while carrying heavy bags, knitting, chopping food, and/or using a computer are additional causes of “tennis” or “golfer’s” elbow. With sports, the difficulty comes up when an individual,  who is new to a particular game, uses an unsuitable technique, experiments with new rackets or clubs, or increases the intensity or duration of exercise without the proper preparation.

Epicondylitis can at times originate farther up the arm or even in the neck. If someone has a disc complication or spinal subluxation, the nerves that give movement to the forearm muscles may become irritated producing tense muscles and placing heightened strain on the tendon attachment(s).  In these circumstances, it predisposes someone to elbow pain from any of the above-mentioned causes. If no treatment is given, joints of the elbow can become subluxated further, and even arthritis can be a difficulty with the condition. Evaluation and treatment by a qualified chiropractor, such as your Mount Laurel Chiropractor can remedy the condition and help to avoid future complications.

Appropriate treatment is essential because epicondylitis seldom, if ever, resolves on its own. A qualified professional such as a chiropractor can determine the exact cause of the problem and initiate the proper care and treatment. This might include modalities such as ultrasound, electro-therapy, massage, hot and cold therapies, bracing, and home stretching and exercises. Mount Laurel Chiropractic adjustments have proved, time and time again, to be extraordinarily beneficial in the overall management of elbow pain.
