The recent, rushed development of the swine flu vaccine and its availability as a form of controlling the current H1N1 pandemic that is spreading around the world has not brought about a positive reaction from everyone. Many news outlets have reported that people have many questions about swine flu shot ingredients, adequate testing and possible side effects. Many feel that receiving the injection may cause greater harm than just becoming infected with the swine flu.
While it isn’t possible to say whether the reaction of some people to the swine flu vaccine is justified or not, there is a basis for their concern. In 1976, an outbreak of the swine flu occurred and thus a vaccine was developed by the government. A nation-wide vaccination program was decided upon for treating the flu, and it resulted in more deaths and severe illnesses than the authorities had expected. In fact, the swine flu alone was easier to treat than the side effects that resulted from the vaccination. One side effect from the vaccination in 1976 was Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disorder of unknown cause which results in muscle weakness, sensory loss and can ultimately result in permanent paralysis.
Based on health data, the vaccine for swine flu back in 1976 caused the deaths of people, and there is now evidence that the vaccine created this year has also done the same thing. In a good number of the situations that resulted in death, the victims had multiple primary health problems that it appears couldn’t contend with the inoculation as well. While this is a form of reassurance, assuming that you are reasonably healthy, it nevertheless indicates that in order to stop the swine flu pandemic, there is a risk of death from the vaccine.
Despite the fact that there are certain worries about difficulties the swine influenza vaccine could result in, there are more general, public health concerns. Some folks think that the vaccine may keep them from getting sick due to the H1N1 virus, but that their overall immune system strength will be compromised. This is not necessarily an argument opposed to the H1N1 vaccine, yet against vaccinations on the whole. These people believe that swine flu therapy should consist mostly of rest and vitamins, instead of being shot full of mysterious ingredients.
As a result of all these swine flu vaccine fears, there is now a low percentage of the general population that are interested in receiving the vaccine. There was a similar response in 1976, where distrust of the results and the national news surrounding the situation meant most people decided not to get the vaccine. Whether that is the right decision now, with a very different world and a different level of exposure to the virus, remains to be seen.
