The Best Treatments for Dry Skin

If you have sensitive or dry skin and you have acne you’ll need to take special care to, not only cure the acne, but to look after your skin. The majority of acne treatments will cause your skin to dry out as they are intended to check overproduction of oil and if you have dry skin this will only make things worse. Your skin could become red, flaky and irritated. If you have sensitive skin the chemicals in some acne remedies can increase redness and irritation so you must be especially cautious which treatments you use.

Why Our Skin Becomes Dry and Sensitive

As we get older our skin has a tendency to become drier as the cells begin to produce a reduced amount of sebum. Elastin and collagen in the skin are damaged and are repaired less efficiently, which results in to less elastic, drier skin. Furthermore as women approach the menopause the production of estrogen drops which also causes the skin to dry out. Dry skin may also be caused by cold weather and for those of us with sensitive skin it can easily be irritated by some ingredients in make up and skin care creams and lotions as well as fragrances or rough fabrics.

Acne Treatments For Dry or Sensitive Skin

1. Cleansing Preparations

A routine for skin care that includes gentle cleansing with a mild cleanser and moisturizing is needed if you have dry or sensitive skin. Cleansers marketed especially for those with acne aren’t very appropriate for these skin types. They contain very harsh ingredients for treating the acne but will probably cause irritation and redness on sensitive skin. You should use a gentler cleanser as an alternative that contains only mild ingredients and won’t irritate your skin any further. Don’t wash your face too often and on no account scrub strongly or use a harsh cloth in an effort to clean off the dirt that is thought to be the cause of acne. This will simply cause more inflammation and distribute the bacteria that cause acne all over your skin which will certainly give rise to more breakouts. Cleansing two times a day is adequate using a gentle soap. Either use your hands or a freshly boiled soft washcloth or if possible use disposable cotton pads.

2. Moisturizing For Dry or Sensitive Skin

You should use a very good moisturizer for dry skin but ensure you use a product that is light and will not add more oil which will make your acne worse. Thick creams and lotions are unsuitable as they will clog up the pores and set off more irritation.

3. Acne Remedies For Sensitive or Dry Skin

Some ingredients that may be used in acne remedies include benzoyl peroxide, vitamin A derivatives and salicylic acids. For sensitive or dry skin choose one with a very low concentration initially so that you can see your skin reacts. If it does not cause redness or irritation you could use a more concentrated product. be careful not to use all over your face but use a only a small quantity only in the problem area and only use once a day until your skin becomes more used to it. You could also consider using a natural cure for acne such as tea tree oil, either in a ready made lotion or cream that contains tea tree oil, or by making a solution of pure tea tree oil diluted in water and applying it to your face. Tea tree oil has proved to be nearly as effective as benzoyl peroxide but does not dry out the skin as much.

Conclusion

Dry and sensitive skins may get acne and require particular looking after so that you do not make your skin condition much worse while you are treating your acne. Always use acne remedies with as mild ingredients as you can and think about trying acne home remedies as a replacement for the harsher ready made products that are available.
