Treating Depression with Paxil and Heartburn Treatment

Paroxatine, which is sold under the commercial name of Paxil, is one of the many medications that are prescribed by doctors for treating depression. It has also been used as an effective treatment for a variety of anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxieties and panic attacks. Paxil is a member of a family of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which is one of the newer types of antidepressants to come on the market today.

It is thought that these medications work by suppressing the reabsorption of serotonin into the nerve cells of the brain, leaving more of this substance available in the brain. This allows the neurotransmitters to fire more effectively, and can improve mood as a result. While it sounds like a complicated process, the bottom line is that Paxil and other medications like it can be an effective way to treat depression and other types of anxiety disorder. However, if you are suffering from depression and frequent bouts of heartburn, you may find a link between Paxil and heartburn remedies that you might currently be taking.

Paxil and Heartburn Medications

Like any medication, Paxil can interact with other drugs, leaving one or the other ineffective or even causing a dangerous combination within your body. One of the medications that have been known to interact with Paxil is the heartburn medicine known as antacids. This is particularly true if you are taking the medication known as Paxil PR. If your doctor wants to prescribe Paxil for you, and you currently take antacids regularly as a treatment for heartburn symptoms, you should let your doctor know about this potential drug interaction issue. He can either prescribe a different antidepressant or offer alternative in heartburn treatment that might be safer.

You can also avoid the interaction between Paxil and heartburn remedies by treating your heartburn the natural way. This might include avoiding the foods that you know will cause your heartburn, like citrus fruits, tomatoes, or foods high in fat content. It is also a good idea to avoid smoking and alcohol consumption, since both of these substances can contribute to the incidence of heartburn as well. Finally, avoid large meals and never lie down right after eating. Plan your last meal of the day at least two to three hours before bedtime to ensure that the act of lying down doesn’t spur your heartburn symptoms to begin. It is possible that with a few lifestyle changes you can say goodbye to the worry about Paxil and heartburn remedies interacting with one another once and for all.
